About Matt Jewelers
Matt Matsuda (my father), was born in Perris CA and raised in the San Fernando Valley farming. After World War II, he relocated to Chicago, and it was there he to pursued a career in jewelry.
In 1945, he enrolled in a local trade school. A watch-making course was his first choice, but it was full so instead he signed up for a jewelry course. After six months of school he found a new passion and skill for jewelry making. He graduated and went on to work for a local jewelry repair and manufacturing shop.
There he worked diligently and in one year he was offered a job as a platinum smith. He worked in the jewelry industry in Chicago until 1956, when he decided to move his family to San Diego. His first job was with Ed Benjamin and in 1957, he started his own trade shop servicing most of San Diego’s jewelry stores.

As for myself, like my siblings I grew up in the jewelry business. After taking what turned out to be a life-long sabbatical from college, I started working with my parents in 1980. In 1981, I graduated from the Ray Schow School of Diamond Setting in Portland, Oregon. I came back to San Diego where I apprenticed with Paris Von Rabenau for one year. In 1982, I attended the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) where I received my Diamond Certificate and in 1986, I returned to GIA and received my Jewelry Design Certificate.
In 2013 I decided to move to the beautiful island of O’ahu Hawai’i. After living in paradise I came to realize that San Diego is my home. So, I moved back, and I carry on the family tradition of servicing San Diego’s fine jewelry needs.
